The surname Bartly was first found in at Strathdon, in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland, and were descended from Parlan and the son of Parlan whose name became Farlane and Bartley, at the time when it was undesirable to continue a name beginning with Mac.
