Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Early immigrants include: Bagnell Settlers in Australia in the 19th Century- Mr. William Bagnell, Sr., (b. 1769), aged 47, English convict who was convicted in Middlesex, England for 14 years for coining, transported aboard the "Fame" on 9th October 1816, arriving in New South Wales, Australia, he died in 1827 6
