Early Origins of the Badbray family

The surname Badbray was first found in Northamptonshire at Badby, a parish, in the union of Daventry, hundred of Fawsley. 1

The first record of the family was found here when William de Baddebi was listed in the Assize Rolls of 1202. Later William Badby was listed in the Feet of Fines for Surrey in 1388-1389. And later again, Thomas Badby was listed in the Assize Rolls of London in 1425. 2

Further to the north in Scotland, Badbae is in the parish of Latheron, Caithness. "John Badbae was one of Caithness' most celebrated 'Men' was noted for his piety." 3

Migration of the Badbray family

The New World beckoned as many of the settlers in Ireland, known as the Scotch/Irish, became disenchanted. They sailed aboard the armada of sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. Some called them, less romantically, the "coffin ships." Amongst the early settlers who could be considered kinsmen of the Badbray family, or who bore a variation of the surname Badbray were Isaac Badbury, aged 37, who arrived at Ellis Island in 1908
