It is a product of their having lived in a township and estate by the name of Anderton in the county of Lancashire, located north of Ince on the coast north of Liverpool. "This place gave name to a family which was seated here at an early period; it comprises about 800 acres, and has coal-mines, and good stone-quarries." 1 One of the more famous branches held Euxton Hall at Euxton in Lancashire. "Over the portal, and also on two old chimneypieces in the house, are to be seen the arms of the Molyneuxs and Andertons quartered; William Anderton, Esq., having married Mary, daughter of the fifth viscount Molyneux. Laurence Anderton, alias Scroop (1577-1643), was a learned English Jesuit. Of the same stock, he was son of Thomas Anderton, of Horwich, and brother of Christopher Anderton, of Lostock. Robert Anderton (c. 1560-1586) was an English Roman Catholic priest and martyr. He and his close friend William Marsden were taken to the Isle of Wight near the spot where they had landed and executed by hanging, drawing, and quartering on 25 April 1586.

Migration of the Andertan familyThousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries.
