Etymology of Wodell

What does the name Wodell mean?

The distinguished and ancient surname Wodell claims Woodhill Park in Clyffe Pypard in Warwickshire as their ancient homeland. Other records point to Woodhill in Sandon, Essex as possibly being their origin. 1

The name literally means 'dweller by the hill where woad grows', or 'by the wooded hill' from the Old English " wad/wudu" +" hyll." 1

Early Origins of the Wodell family

The surname Wodell was first found in Warwickshire where Albinrfe Wuduhull was recorded in the Liber Feodorum c. 1227. Later in Rutland, we found Symon de Wodhill in the Hundredorum Rolls for 1275 and in Essex, John de Wodhull was listed in the Feet of Fines for 1325. Michael Woodell, cordwainer, was a Freeman of York in 1755. 1

Early Notables of the Wodell family

John Woodall (1556?-1643), English military surgeon, born about 1556, was son of Richard Woodall of Warwick and his wife Mary, daughter of Peirse Ithell of North Wales. He began life as a military surgeon in Lord Willoughby's regiment in 1591, and afterwards lived abroad at Stoad in Germany, and, knowing German well, acted as interpreter to an embassy sent thither by Queen Elizabeth. He remained eight years in Germany, travelling also in France and in Poland, where he practised the cure of the plague. In 1599 he was admitted to the Barber-Surgeons Company in London, of which he became a warden...
