Etymology of Waldack

What does the name Waldack mean?

Since the Anglo-Saxons had originally come from the German Rhineland, their language was similar to the dialect of that region. Thus the Anglo-Saxon and German name Waldack, both come from the same root words, from the Old High German "wald" for wood and "ecka" for corner or "eiche" for oak.

Early Origins of the Waldack family

The surname Waldack was first found in Germany, where the descendents of Widukind III, Count of Schwalenberg (1116-37) named themselves for the Castle of Waldeck, acquired around 1150.

Migration of the Waldack family

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Waldack or a variant listed above: Mary Walduck, who married Thomas Rehoe in Barbados in 1736; William Waldock, who emigrated from Hertfordshire to Ontario in 1836; and Charles Waldock, who was recorded in the 1871 census in Ontario..
