Early Origins of the Toodle family

The surname Toodle was first found in various counties throughout Britain. "This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Totehill,' i.e. the look-out hill. Many spots are so called in all parts of England. A hill with a good outlook against an enemy's approach. " 1 2

Today Tothill is a parish, in the union of Louth, Marsh division of the hundred of Calceworth, parts of Lindsey, in Lincolnshire. "This place is said to take its name from a very high round hill in the parish, called Toote Hill. " 3

The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 listed: Custance Totel in Cambridgeshire, 1273; and Roger Tothull in Oxfordshire at that time. Later the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 listed: Johannes de Totehill; Willelmus de Totehill; Johannes de Tutill; Agnes filius Thome de Totehil; and John de Totehill. 1

But we must look to Warwickshire for the earliest record of the family. For it is there that Gilbert de Totehille was listed as a Knights Templar in 1185. 4
