The surname Stillman was first found in Essex where one of the first records of the name was Robert Stegelman who was listed there in 1270. John Stileman was also listed in Essex in the Subsidy Rolls in 1327. In the same year John Stighelman was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Sussex. [1] Bardsley claims the name originally was "a local name as in 'the stileman,' is the man who lived as the stile. " [2]
