The roots of the Anglo-Saxon name Shalcross come from when the family resided in the county of Derbyshire. The surname Shalcross is a habitation surname which forms a broad category of surnames that were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. In this case the family was named after the ancient stone cross that stood in the High Peak forest in the parish of Shackelcross.

Shalcross Early Origins

The surname Shalcross was first found in Derbyshire at Shallcross, a small village in northwestern portion of the shire. Some claim the name Shallcross comes from an ancient stone cross, known as the Shall Cross which dated back to 832 when St. Paulinus visited the area.

The Great Migration

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Shalcross or a variant listed above:
