Scoteny Early Origins



The surname Scoteny was first found in Sussex where Walter de Scotinis (Scotney) built the Castle of Scotney finishing it in the year 1180. He was steward of the Earl of Gloucester temp. Henry III. He "was hanged on a charge of attempting the life of his master. His descendants continued at Scotney till the reign of Edward III." [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

Today Scotney Castle is an English country house with formal gardens which are open to the publi c. The grounds have been used to host Shakespeare productions, notably A Midsummer Night's Dream. "The church [of Lamberhurst] is in the decorated English style, with a square embattled tower surmounted by a low spire, and contains some ancient monuments to the Scotney family, whose sepulchral chapel adjoins the south aisle."
