Etymology of Scahil

What does the name Scahil mean?

The name Scahil is an Anglicization of the sept name "Mac Sgaithghil." The "Mac" prefix over time was changed to an "O" prefix, but neither are currently in use.

Early Origins of the Scahil family

The surname Scahil was first found in O'Dugan's Topographical Poem written about 1365. In the poem the Mac Sgaithghil sept was referred to as "of beautiful studs" and "over Corca Mogha." Corca Mogha, or Corcamoe, was the area originally held by the sept and is equated with the current parish of Kilkerrin in east County Galway (Irish: Gaillimh) part of the province of Connacht, located on the west coast of the Island. The Mac Sgaithghil sept, however, was dispossessed of its lands in the 12th century by the Concannons.
