The name Saffarde has a long Anglo-Saxon heritage. The name comes from when a family lived at the estate of Salford which had three early locations in England including Lancashire, Oxford and Bedfordshire.

Saffarde Early Origins

The surname Saffarde was first found in Bedfordshire in the parish of Salford. "This place, which lies on the borders of Buckinghamshire, was formerly the property of a family who took their name from it, and was afterwards possessed by the Drakelows, and the Charnocks, from whom it passed by marriage to the Herveys." The Great Migration

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Saffarde, or a variant listed above: John, Robert and Mary Salford who settled in Virginia in 1611; nine years before the "Mayflower"; John and Sarah Salford settled in Virginia in 1623.
