Early Origins and Etymology of Rawnsley

The surname Rawnsley was first found in Yorkshire in the West Riding where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the year 1273 when Ralph de Ravensley held estates. This may have related to Ravensfield a village in South Yorkshire which dates back to the Domesday Book where it was listed as Rauenesfeld. A that time, there was a woodland pasture 2 furlongs land and wide and could hold 1 plough. The land was held by William de Warenne. 1 The name was derived from the Old English personal name hraefn + feld which meant "Hraefn, or land frequently traveled by ravens." 2
