The name Punchearde reached English shores for the first time with the ancestors of the Punchearde family as they migrated following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Punchearde family lived in Devon. Their name, however, is a reference to Pontchardon, in Argentan, Normandy, the family's place of residence prior to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

Punchearde Early Origins

The surname Punchearde was first found in Devon where Robert de Pontcardon held lands in 1083. He was from Pontcardon (Pontchardon), near Neauffla in Normandy. Almost one hundred years later, William de Punchardon held six fees in Somerset and Devon. [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

The Great Migration

In England at this time, the uncertainty of the political and religious environment of the time caused many families to board ships for distant British colonies in the hopes of finding land and opportunity, and escaping persecution. The voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, though, and many arrived in North America sick, starved, and destitute. Those who did make it, however, were greeted with greater opportunities and freedoms that they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make important contributions to the young nations in which they settled. Early immigration records have shown some of the first Puncheardes to arrive on North American shores: William Pynchon, who came to in Massachusetts in 1630 with his wife Anne and their four children; Thomas Pinchen, who settled in Barbados in 1663; Michael Pinchard settled in Louisiana in 1719.
