Etymology of Piasecki

What does the name Piasecki mean?

The Polish surname Piasecki is of local origin, deriving from the name of the dwelling place or locality where the original bearer once lived or held land. In this instance, the name is traceable to two townships named Piaseczno; one of which is in the Warsaw region and the other which is situated near Gdansk. This place name derives from a Polish word 'piasek' which is literally translated as 'sandy area'. The feminine form of the name is Piasecka, while the male form is Piasecki.

Early Origins of the Piasecki family

The surname Piasecki was first found in Piaseczno, a town in east-central Poland. The origins of the town date back to a 13th-century. Records of this surname in Poland date back to the sixteenth century and there were several families of nobility of this name living in Poland at the time. Melchior Piasecki was the Deputy Justice of Busk and was also a renowned intellectual during the 1560s. Arnolf Piasecki, another member of this family, was a gallant soldier who died in action during a war against Moscow.

The family is part of the Rawa (Rawicz) Clan which dates back to 1334; members of which include hundreds of other surnames in use today. According to the Polish armorial book "Orbis Polonus" (1641-1643), legend tells us that after an English king died, his son drove a black bear into his sister's chambers. His sister tamed the bear and rode out her chamber on its back, upraising her hands and calling for justice. Her brother asked her pardon and married her off to a Duke of Lorraine, with all due property as a portion of her dowry. The princess gave her descendants a coat of arms with a girl riding a bear depicted on it.

Piasecki migration to the United States +

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Piasecki were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records:
