The ancestors of the Noldin family brought their name to England in the wave of migration after the Norman Conquest of 1066. They lived in the township of Knowlton, Kent, from whence their name is taken.

Early Origins of the Noldin family

The surname Noldin was first found in Kent where they held a family seat from ancient times, and were granted the lands by King William the Conqueror for their assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. They were conjecturally descended from Thurstan, a Norman noble, who held the lands of Knowlton, originally spelt Chenoltone, from the Bishop of Bayeux.

Migration of the Noldin family

Many English families left England, to avoid the chaos of their homeland and migrated to the many British colonies abroad. Although the conditions on the ships were extremely cramped, and some travelers arrived diseased, starving, and destitute, once in the colonies, many of the families prospered and made valuable contributions to the cultures of what would become the United States and Canada. Research into the origins of individual families in North America has revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Noldin or a variant listed above: Thomas Knowlton settled in Hingham Massachusetts in 1630; T. and N. Knowlton arrived in San Francisco in 1851; James Nolton settled in Potomac Maryland in 1731.
