The distinguished name Moxam is derived from the name of an ancestor as in 'the son of Margaret,' from the nickname Mogg or Moggy, (Moggie) sharpened to Mock. 1 "Moggie's son, would by crasis become Moxon." 2 Early Origins of the Moxam familyThe surname Moxam was first found in Suffolk at Bury St. Edmunds, a historic market and cathedral town. Conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of lands in that shire Siward Mocesun, a Norman noble who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. 3 He was from Calvados in Normandy. 4 Siuuard Mocesun (perhaps a descendant) was recorded as holding lands there in an early rolls (1087-1098.)
