This surname is associated with the village of Meolse, which was recorded in the Domesday Book in the year 1086. The lands were described as a coastal village on the southern shore of the Wirral peninsular on the River Dee where Roman and Saxon coins and jewelry were found at Dove Point. Geoffry and Simon de Mele were registered in Cambridgeshire in 1279. North Meols in Lancashire was of great significance to the family in early times. "At the time of the Domesday Survey, three thanes held this place in three manors.
