The surname Mapson was a baptismal name derived from 'the son of Mabel.' 1 One source notes the name could have been derived from Mabesoone; in the Domesday Book of 1086. 2 3 Early Origins of the Mapson familyThe surname Mapson was first found in Lancashire where William Mabbeson was recorded in the Subsidy Rolls of 1332. Later, William Mabbesson was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Suffolk in 1381 and in Yorkshire, we found William Mabotson, Mabetson in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379. 4 Another source notes John Mabson, in the Patent Rolls, in 8 Richard II (1491.)
