The surname MacGroarty was first found in County Donegal (Irish: Dún na nGall), northwest Ireland in the province of Ulster, sometimes referred to as County Tyrconnel, where they were the coarbs (hereditary lay lords) of the church of St. Columcille in Tory Island.
