Etymology of Goldburge

What does the name Goldburge mean?

The family name of a Jew was typically left to the individual person up until the end of the 18th century. Majority, especially in Germany and eastern Europe, still followed the custom having their father’s name included in their name. Whereas, Jews in Spain, Portugal, and Italy had already adopted the practice of using fixed family names. 1

Goldburge, however, is a habitation name: there is a place called Goldburgh in Silesia, that the first Goldberg took his name from, over six hundred years ago. "Berg" is the Yiddish word for a 'hill'. Goldburge is one of the most widespread Jewish family names, and they did not all descend from the Silesian families. The name was adopted by many others, especially by Jews honoring a matriarch by the name of Golda.
