Early Origins of the Falconi family

The surname Falconi was first found in Messina (Sicilian: Missina; Latin: Messana), capital of the Italian province of Messina. Its history begins in 397 B.C. After a checkered history the Saracens took it in 831, and the Normans in 1061. It was host to the crusaders in 1190. Garibaldi landed in 1860 and it was the last city to be made a part of united Italy. The first record of the name was in the year 1000 when the family held estates in Cerami, Comiso, Asaro, Lamotta, in the barony of Domicella.

Alexis (Alessio) Falconieri (1200-1310), son of Bernardo Falconieri, a merchant prince of Florence, one of the leaders of the Republic, was one of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order, one of seven men of the town of Florence who became bound to each other in a spiritual friendship. Pope Leo XIII canonized them all on 15 January 1888 and their feast was inserted in the General Roman Calendar for celebration on 11 February.

Saint Juliana Falconieri, O.S.M., (1270-1341) was the Italian foundress of the Religious Sisters of the Third Order of Servites (Mantellate Sisters or the Servite Tertiaries). She was from the noble Falconieri family of Florence.
