The name Exner was originally an occupational name derived from the Old English words "oxan" meaning oxen and "hierde" for herdsman.

Early Origins of the Exner family

The surname Exner was first found in Yorkshire where early records reveal that William Oxenerd held estates in that shire in 1201. He was succeeded by Johannes Oxinhird who was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax records of 1379. By 1600 they held a family seat at Skipton, a market town and civil parish within the Craven district of North Yorkshire.
