Germany Early Origins of the Engelhard familyThe surname Engelhard was first found in Silesia, where the name gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. It later became more prominent as many branches of the same house acquired distant estates and branches, some in foreign countries, always elevating their social status by their great contributions to society. From this family, Francis Engleheart, the great miniature-painter, a member of the noble Silesian family, emigrated to England in the time of George II, and settled at Kew. His family included: his grandson Francis Engelheart (1775-1849), the English engraver; his son, George Engleheart (1752-1839), the English miniature-painter; and another son, Thomas Engleheart (d. 1787?), an English sculptor and modeller in wax. 1 Early History of the Engelhard familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Engelhard research.
