Dalston Early Origins

The surname Dalston was first found in Cumberland where they were established shortly after the Conquest when Ranulph Meschin granted the barony of Dalston to Robert, brother of Hubert and Ranulph de Vaux. Hence, conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Dalston, about five miles from Carlisle, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. Lord of Gillisland, first assumed the name from his residence. Robert was from the de Vaux Castle in Berners in Normandy and is recorded at Hastings. From this de Vaux family descended both the Stricklands and the Dalstons. Today, Dalston is a large village with a population of about 2,500 people within the City of Carlisle district of Cumbria, England.
