The name Cheaseman comes from one of the family having worked as a maker of the village cheese. The surname Cheaseman can be traced to the Old English cesewyrhta which means "a cheese-maker." This profession was very important in the medieval period; in the days before refrigeration, milk could be kept for a day or two at most, and the only way to ensure a long term supply of dairy products was to make it into cheese. The suffix -wright was usually adopted by a someone who provided a service with either wood or machinery.

The Great Migration



Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Among the first immigrants of the name Cheaseman, or a variant listed above to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were : Paul Cheeswright who sailed to Georgia in 1732.
