What does the name Cartlich mean?

The name Cartlich has a long Anglo-Saxon heritage. The name comes from when a family lived near a pond or bog in rocky land having derived from the Old Norman word kartr, which means rocky land, and suffix -lake, for pond or bog. The suffix -lake is often rendered as -ledge in compound names. The surname meant dweller by the rocky pond. 1 The name originated in Lancashire or East Cheshire. 2

However, another source claims the name originated in "Cartledge in Holmesfield (Derbyshire)." 3

The surname Cartlich was first found in Cheshire where Richard de Cartelache was listed in the Assize Rolls of 1290. Later, Richard de Cartlege was listed in Cheshire in 1435 and Thomas Cartlidge was found in Sheffield in 1641. 3
