Boulaye History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The Boulaye surname is generally thought to derived from the Old French word "boul," denoting a type of birch tree. As a name it was likely first used by someone living near such trees, or perhaps from a place name derived from the tree name. It has also been suggested that some instances of the Boulaye name find their roots in the Old French word "boule" or "ball." In this case the name was likely originally a nickname for someone of a rotund shape. La Boulaye is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the region of Bourgogne in eastern France. Fort De La Boulaye, also known as Mississippi Fort was a fort built by the French in 1700, to take control over the Mississippi. Native Americans forced the French to vacate the fort by 1707.
