Early Origins and Etymology of Biterly

The surname Biterly was first found in Shropshire at Bitterley, a parish, in the union of Ludlow, partly in the hundred of Munslow, but chiefly in the hundred of Overs. 1 The place name dates back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was listed as Buterlie. 2 The place name literally means "pasture which produces good butter," from the Old English "butere" + "leah." 3

Near the village the Bitterley Hoard, the largest post medieval / English Civil War Coin Hoard was discovered on 17 February 2011. The find consists of one gold coin and 137 high denomination silver coins from the reign of Edward VI.

Biterly Spelling Variations

Sound was what guided spelling in the essentially pre-literate Middle Ages, so one person's name was often recorded under several variations during a single lifetime. Also, before the advent of the printing press and the first dictionaries, the English language was not standardized. Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Biterly family name include Bitterley, Bitterly, Biterley, Biterley and others.

Migration of the Biterly family

For political, religious, and economic reasons, thousands of English families boarded ships for Ireland, Canada, the America colonies, and many of smaller tropical colonies in the hope of finding better lives abroad. Although the passage on the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving, those families that survived the trip often went on to make valuable contributions to those new societies to which they arrived. Early immigrants bearing the Biterly surname or a spelling variation of the name include: Emma Bitterly, who arrived at Ellis Island, in 1904; and Eugene Bitterly, who arrived at Ellis Island, in 1904.
