Etymology of BilburryWhat does the name Bilburry mean? The name Bilburry first arose amongst the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is derived from their having lived in Bilbrough, a village near Tadcaster in the county of Yorkshire. The place name appears in the 11th century in the Domesday Book of 1086: "In Bilbrough, Christchurch, 8 carucates of land taxable. Land for 4 ploughs. Richard (son of Arnfastr) has there one plough; and 6 villagers and 2 smallholders with 2 ploughs. Woodland pasture in places. The whole, 1 league long and a half wide. Value before 1066, 44s; now 22s." Early Origins of the Bilburry familyThe surname Bilburry was first found in Yorkshire, at the village of Billbrough where despite the village's long history back to the Domesday Book, 1 has a population of only 319 accordingly to the 2001 census. Migration of the Bilburry familyAt this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Bilburry arrived in North America very early: William Bilbrough who arrived in Virginia in 1650 and Joseph Bilbrough in Pennsylvania in 1828.
