Etymology of Baumbeck

What does the name Baumbeck mean?

From the historical and enchanting region of Hessen, which reaches from the city of Kassel to the river Main, and extends from the Rhine to the borders of Thuringia and Bavaria, emerged the distinguished Baumbeck family. The Germanic tribe of the Chatten, who were loyal subjects of the Franks and who remained in their homeland instead migrating with the other Germanic tribes, originally inhabited these lands. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the tribes were converted to Christianity by St. Boniface, and Mainz became the seat of an Archbishop. The present capital of Hessen is Wiesbaden, although the most important city of this region has long been Frankfurt, the financial heart of modern Germany. Frankfurt was an Imperial City for centuries, the place of coronation for the German Holy Roman Emperors since 1562, as well as the seat of the German National Assembly in the 19th century.

Early Origins of the Baumbeck family

The surname Baumbeck was first found in Hessen, where the name became noted for its many branches within the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region. They appeared in mediaeval chronicles in 1246 and 1295, and Ludovicus de Baumbach lived in 1337. In its later history the family became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family.
