The distinguished name Mixson is derived from the name of an ancestor as in 'the son of Margaret,' from the nickname Mogg or Moggy, (Moggie) sharpened to Mock. 1 "Moggie's son, would by crasis become Moxon." 2
The surname Mixson was first found in Suffolk at Bury St. Edmunds, a historic market and cathedral town. Conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of lands in that shire Siward Mocesun, a Norman noble who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. 3 He was from Calvados in Normandy.
Siuuard Mocesun (perhaps a descendant) was recorded as holding lands there in an early rolls (1087-1098.) Years later, we find some of the family in Yorkshire where John (Johannes) Mokesson was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379. 4 Another source notes that Robertus Mokeson; Johannes Mokeson; and Roger Mokson were also listed in the same Poll Tax. 1
