Etymology of Lewandowski

What does the name Lewandowski mean?

The Lewandowski family name is a significant part of the long, complex history that belongs to Poland. This surname is a habitation name that was derived from a Polish estate called Lewandw. The original bearers of this name, then, lived on or near that estate. The name of the estate was probably derived from the Polish personal name Lewanda or Levon, which are derived from the root leo, meaning "lion" or perhaps from the word lewanda, lawenda meaning "lavender" or the geographical name Levant.

One source claims the name is from Lewandow, (Lewand's settlement) 1 now part of Warsaw, but this is unlikely as this was established in the 19th century and the family records date back to at least the 17th century. 2

The Polish suffix "-ski" (masculine) and "ska" (feminine) means "from, of " and is often found in surnames of local origin. Therefore, the surname Lewandowski signifies "one who came from the state of Lewandow".

Early Origins of the Lewandowski family

The surname Lewandowski was first found in Halicz, in Galizia (Poland). A member of the family, Adalbert-Johann Levandoski was registered among the nobility of Galizia on June 1783 and his grandson Wilhelm was registered in 1828 (Matrikel des Adels von Galizien). The family was divided in two branches. The first branch had their ancestral seat located in the district of Halicz and three of their members, Josef, Johann and Anton Levandowski became members of the nobility of Galizia in 1787.

The other branch came from the state of Halicz and one of the descendants of this family, Martin Levandowski was ennobled in 1782.

Another Lewandowski family became members of the order of knighthood of Prussia.
