The surname Twoley was first found in the Domesday Book of 1086 where the names Toli, Thole, Tholi all appear. 1

Later in Lincolnshire, Reginaldus filius Toli or Tuly was listed in the Curia Regis Rolls for 1214 and Richard Toly was listed at St. Thomas, Staffordshire c. 1150. The Pipe Rolls for Northumberland list Peter Toli as holding lands there in 1155. 2
