Early Origins of the Tadly family

The surname Tadly was first found in Cambridgeshire at Tadlow, a civil parish and village in the union of Caxton and Arrington, hundred of Armingford. 1 There are scant records of the name but the first on record was Roysia de Tadelowe who was listed in Cambridgeshire in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273. 2 3 At this time the surname was also spelt Tadloo. The first record of the place name dates back to c. 1080 when it was first listed as Tadeslaue which would point towards a Saxon heritage. Just eight years later, the place name was listed as Tadelai in the Domesday Book of 1086. 4 Literally the place name means "tumulus (burial ground) of a man called Tada," from the Old English personal name + "hlaw." 5

Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Tadly family name include Tadlow, Tadlowe, Tadloe, Tadlo, Tedlow, Tedloe, Tedlo, Tadlowe, Dadlow and many more.

Migration of the Tadly family

For political, religious, and economic reasons, thousands of English families boarded ships for Ireland, Canada, the America colonies, and many of smaller tropical colonies in the hope of finding better lives abroad. Although the passage on the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving, those families that survived the trip often went on to make valuable contributions to those new societies to which they arrived. Early immigrants bearing the Tadly surname or a spelling variation of the name include: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands..
