The surname Sprotson was first found in Cheshire at Sproston, which dates back to the Domesday Book as lands originally held by William Malbank, Baron of Nantwich. 1 The family is generally believed to have been from Brecey near Caen in Normandy. Sproston literally meant "farmstead of a man called Sprow" derived from the Old English personal name + tun. 2 Sproston and Sproston Green have remained small townships through the years as a census taken in the late 1800s listed only 171 inhabitants.
