The surname Rosington was first found in West Riding of Yorkshire at Rossington, a parish, in the union and soke of Doncaster. 1 The place name literally means "farmstead at the moor," from the Celtic word "ros" + the Old English "-ing" + "tun." 2

Jermias de Rosinton was the first record of the family recorded in the Curia Regis Rolls for Yorkshire in 1210. Later Peter of Rosington was listed in the Feet of Fines for Yorkshire in 1246. 3
