Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Jean Lemire, the son of Mathurin Lemire and Jeanne Bouvier, originally from Rouen in Normandy, who was born in 1626. He settled in Canada and in 1653 he married Louise Marsolet, the daughter of Nicolas Marsolais and Marie la Barbide, also from Rouen. He was a carpenter, who took part in the construction of the Cathedral of Quebec in 1684. He is credited with the construction of the bell in the south tower of the Cathedral, which was constructed of the wood of Batiscan oak, under the direction of Claude Baillif.
