Or it may derive from a number of ancient Germanic names beginning with the Old High German element "Hagan" meaning "enclosure." In this last case, the surname Hanckh may also have been applied as a locative name, inspired by a geographical feature near where the bearer resided. Early mentions of the name include Bartlome Hanngg, a resident of Ravensburg in 1480, and the Hanke family from Rehme who were granted a blazon of arms. Jacob Hennecke also known as Hencken or Hanke was a mayor in 1525. Hans Hanckin lived in Hochdorf in 1685, and Cord Hancke and his son Johann Hinrich Hanke in Rehme in 1665 and 1675.
