Early Origins of the Galvano family

The surname Galvano was first found in northern Italy, particularly in the Emilia-Romagna region. Traditionally the name is thought to have been from an Oltremontano (one from across the mountain) who came, shortly after the middle of the 13th century, from Carpi and Guelfo VI, Duke of Bavaria. Over time, the family divided into various branches who settled in Bologna, Argenta, Cento, Ferrara, Modena, etc. It seems certain that the Galvani family, originally from Bologna, settled in the Ferrarese area since the 15th century. The ancestors of the famous physicist Luigi Galvani (1737-1798) are thought to have belonged to the branch that flourished in Argenta. After the devolution of this city to the Holy See (1598), the Galvani family from Ferrara followed Duke Cesare d'Este in Modena. Camillo, son of the late Gaspare Galvani and his children were created by the Senator from Modena as citizens of Modena on 28 October 1686.
