 England Early Origins of the Dottin familyThe surname Dottin was first found in Devon at Dotton, which was listed as Otrit in the Domesday Book of 1086. At that time, there was land enough for 2 ploughs and comprised about 2 acres of meadow and 10 acres of pasture. It was held by Baldwin the Sheriff. The village or parish has since been lost but the family name was first referenced in the year 1240 when William de Dotton held estates there. Dotton is also listed in Somerset about the same time as a mill on the River Otter and this mill continued in operation from about 1100 through 1960 when it was demolished. Dotton, Somerset is now little more than a farm about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from the mouth of the Otter. The British first settled the British West Indies around 1604. They made many attempts but failed in some to establish settlements on the Islands including Saint Lucia and Grenada. By 1627 they had managed to establish settlements on St. Kitts (St. Christopher) and Barbados, but by 1641 the Spanish had moved in and destroyed some of these including those at Providence Island. The British continued to expand the settlements including setting the First Federation in the British West Indies by 1674; some of the islands include Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Island, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica and Belize then known as British Honduras. By the 1960's many of the islands became independent after the West Indies Federation which existed from 1958 to 1962 failed due to internal political conflicts.
