The Dorington name has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in the village of Dorrington, in the county of Lincolnshire. Alternatively, the name could have been derived from Durrington, parishes in West Sussex and Wiltshire. In both cases the parishes are listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Derintone and Derentune, respectively. The Wiltshire parish is unlikely as "this parish, which is situated on the river Avon, appears to have belonged in part, for centuries, to the family of Poore, descendants in a direct line from the founder of Salisbury Cathedral, " 1 but that leaves the West Sussex parish in question.

Interestingly, RAF Durrington was a World War II ground-controlled interception (GCI) radar station in Durrington, West Sussex. The station has been repurposed as Palatine School, a school for those with special educational needs.

Early Origins of the Dorington family

United States Dorington migration to the United States +

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Dorington were among those contributors:
