Cumry History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Early Origins of the Cumry family

The surname Cumry was first found in Perthshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Pheairt) former county in the present day Council Area of Perth and Kinross, located in central Scotland in the parish of Comrie. " The name is derived from a Gaelic term signifying 'Confluence,' used in this instance in reference to the junction of the rivers Earn, Ruchill, and Lednock near the site of the church of Comrie. Several traces of camps and fortifications, some of which have been recently obliterated by the operations of husbandry, connect it with the military enterprises of the ancient Romans. " [1]

Migration of the Cumry family

North America was far from Britain's oppressive monarchy. There, the Scottish found land and freedom, and many even the opportunity to pay back England in the American War of Independence. This brave heritage survives today largely in Clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations. Research into passenger and immigration lists has brought forth evidence of the early members of the Cumry family in North America: Thomas Comry who arrived in Philadelphia in 1841; Alexander Comery arrived in New York State in 1774; M. Commerey landed in New Orleans in 1822.
