The name Butrick was originally derived from a family having lived in Butterwick, a place-name found in various locations throughout England. There is a Butterwick in Durham, where it was recorded in 1131 as Boterwyk; Lincolnshire, where in the Domesday Book of 1086 1 it was the site of two churches on lands held by Guy de Craon; in North Yorkshire, where there are two villages called Butterwick; and in Humber, where there are found East and West Butterwick. Butterwick means dairy farm where butter is made. A great wave of immigration to the New World was the result of the enormous political and religious disarray that struck England at that time. Families left for the New World in extremely large numbers. The long journey was the end of many immigrants and many more arrived sick and starving. Still, those who made it were rewarded with an opportunity far greater than they had known at home in England.
