The ancestors of the bearers of the Brazewell family name are thought have lived in ancient Anglo-Saxon England. They were first found in Yorkshire, where they took their name from the village of Bracewell which was originally in the West Riding of Yorkshire, but now in Lancashire. The name was originally rendered in the Old English form Breiorwella, which meant the dweller at the broad-well, and would have been used to denote residence near the village well.
