Early Origins of the Botello family

The surname Botello was first found in Castile, in north central Spain. The chroniclers, Arturo and Alberto García Carrafa, cite the surname Botello as originating with Martín Alonso Tello, the defender of the town of Alburquerque against the King of Castile Don Pedro I "the Cruel."His was held in such esteem that he was frequently called him "Buen Tello", which in Portuguese is "Boo Tello" or "Good Tello", from which two words this surname was formed. Therefore, the name Botello has an appellative origin, derived from a nickname given to its first bearer.

Alternatively, the name could have been an occupational surname. Such surnames derive from the work, trade or profession of the original bearer. In this case, the surname derives from the Portuguese "botelho" meaning "kelp, seaweed", and would signify "a gatherer of the kelp or seaweed". 1
