The German state of Bavaria is the ancestral home of the Bebbenberg family. Bebbenberg is a local name, first used as a surname for someone who lived in the castle Bebenburg near Bretheim. Rudolph Kuchenmeister, the founding father of the name owned this ancient castle, during the 13th century. After the 16th century, a period of widespread European migration, the Bebbenberg name spread into neighboring regions as members searched for occupations in religious, military, or political service. As a result, numerous different branches of the family name emerged. The two major houses of the name Bebenburg were found in Franconia. The house of Bebenburg proper, which stemmed from the von Kuchenmeister family, held their seat in the canton Rhoen-Werra. The other house, which descended from the Karg von Bebenburg, held their seat in the canton of Gebuerg.

The surname Bebbenberg was first found in the Franconian canton Rhoen-Werra, where the family gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. From early on, there were two separate Franconian houses bearing the name Bebenburg. One house, the Karg von Bebenburg, had their seat in the canton of Gebuerg. The house of Bebenburg proper, however, stemmed from the von Kuchenmeister family and had their seat in the canton Rhoen-Werra. The founding father is taken to be Rudolph Kuchenmeister, who owned the castle Bebenburg near Bretheim around 1230.

Migration of the Bebbenberg family

European migration to North America began in the mid-17th century and continued unabated until the mid-20th. Many Bavarians made the long trip to escape poverty or persecution based on their religious beliefs. The chance for tenant farmers to own their own land was also a major drawing card. They settled all across the United States in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Many came to Canada also, settling in Ontario and the prairie provinces. Analysis of immigration records has shown some of the first Bebbenbergs to arrive in North America, and among them were: members of the family who settled on the eastern seaboard of the United States.
