This surname was originally derived from the name of a place located in the district of Cavado, in Portugal. The name is derived from the Portuguese word "azevinho" meaning holly as in the European holly.

Early Origins of the Azevedo family

The surname Azevedo was first found in Viana do Castelo, Portugal where Dórdia Pais Azevedo (c. 1080-1124) was the founding father of the family. He died in Ribadouro, Porto, Portugal and was brother of Mem Pais Bufinho (c. 1100-?). His son was Pero Mendes de Azevedo (1150-1217).

Guido Viegas de Azevedo (1030-?), born in Spain was Lord of Couto de Azevedo (Barcelos) and a rich man of the Court of King D. Vermudo III of Leão and D. Fernando the Great. While we have no record of the year of his death, we do known he died in Alvarenga, Aveiro, Portugal.
