Early Origins of the Apiano familyThe surname Apiano was first found in Pisa a town in Tuscany, capital of the province of Pisa. Historically, Pisa in it's inter city war in 1003 with Lucca was forced into building its own navy. Then, under threat from the Saracens from Siciliy, it found itself the aggressor against Calabria, Sicily and even in Africa. In 1062 their ships returned from Palermo laden with spoil. But with the Norman Conquest of Sicily they became less profitable. They continued considerable rivalry with Florence and Genoa. Gherardo Appiani (c.1370-May 1405) of Pisa, came to be the lord of Piombino from 1398. The Principality of Piombino was a city-state in Italy, which existed from 1398 to 1805. This family held the Lordship for Centuries. Among the Lords were Iacopo II, ruled 1404-1441; Caterina Appiani (1398-1451,) ruling, lady of Piombino from 1445; and Iacopo IV Appiani (1459-1510,) an Italian condottiero and lord of Piombino of the Appiani dynasty, captain of the Neapolitan Army (1479-1483).
