The Zippe surname is derived from the late Middle High German words "zipf," or "zipfel" meaning "point," "tip," or "corner." It has been suggested that the name may have been topographic, for someone who occupied a narrow corner of land; however, "zipfe," or "zippel" could also mean the point or tassel of a hood; thus suggesting a name evolving from a nickname.
